WHAT IS THE MEANING OF MATTHEW 24:36?
What does it mean when Jesus said no-one knows the day or the hour, NOT EVEN THE SON, but only the Father.
Does this mean that Jesus isn’t God?
Q. DOES MATTHEW 24:36 PROVE JESUS ISN’T GOD?
Firstly, remember at this point in time Jesus had emptied Himself of the fullness of His deity according to Philippians 2:6-7. This could be why Luke 2:52 said that Jesus had to GROW IN WISDOM and STATURE and in FAVOUR with God and men!!!
It was in this emptied, humble state that Jesus said even the SON does not know the day or the hour of His return. This was also fulfilling the role of the JEWISH GROOM in a wedding celebration where only the Father of the groom determined the time the Son would go to get His bride for the wedding feast!!
But, after Jesus’ death and resurrection, Jesus was returned back to His glorified state. Jesus mentioned in His prayer in the garden of Gethsemane in John 17:5
“..Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.”
We now also see that in His resurrected state, Jesus went back to KNOWING ALL THINGS as Peter mentioned in John 21:17!
This could therefore also be why now In Acts 1:6-7 just before His ascension back to heaven, when the disciples asked Jesus whether He was going to restore the kingdom back to Israel then and there, Jesus replied
“It is not for YOU to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority.” (Acts 1:7)
Notice here that Jesus didn’t say “US”? He no longer included Himself as part of the ones who “didn’t know” when the kingdom and He would return!!
2.A second interpretation is that according to 1 Corinthians 2:2, this phrase could refer to “making known” the day or the hour. In other words, Jesus was saying, it is not for man, nor the angels, nor the Son to make known the day or the hour but only The Father’s prerogative to do so!!
But the main point is: WILL YOU BE READY FOR JESUS' COMING, WHENEVER THAT MAY BE?
