WEEK 6 “THE 3 TITLES OF JESUS“ (Luke 2:11)

'For unto you is born this day in the city of David a SAVIOUR, who is CHRIST The LORD.' (Luke 2:11)

The angel of The Lord brought this wonderful gospel news to the shepherds who were out in the fields of Bethlehem that glorious night.

We find in this verse that there are 3 TITLES used of our wonderful Jesus here in Luke 2:11 which help reveal and explain to us WHO JESUS IS.

1. Firstly HE IS OUR SAVIOUR!! This word in the original Greek language the bible was written in, is the word 'Soter' and one of its meanings includes DELIVERER, PRESERVER or SAVIOUR- one who saves! But what exactly does Jesus SAVE US FROM?

The word “save” (as used in Matthew 1:21 for example) is the Greek word “sozo” and it can mean one who rescues us from danger and destruction. The one who saves us from eternal destruction. In this sense, Jesus saves us from the ETERNAL DANGER OF HELL! But we also see in Matthew 1:21 that it says of Jesus “.....He will SAVE his people FROM THEIR SINS.”

Do we truly see Jesus as the ONLY one who can save us from our sins (Matthew 1:21) and save us from eternal destruction in hell? (eternal separation away from our loving God- Matthew 25:41, 2 Thessalonians 1:9).

2. Secondly HE IS THE CHRIST! This means Messiah- “anointed one”. In other words, this means Jesus is full of The Holy Spirit (John 3:34); GOD IN THE FLESH!

Do we see Jesus as truly 'The anointed one' and recognise the power of the Holy Spirit at work in Jesus and therefore now at work in us?

We cannot truly see Jesus as our SAVIOUR unless we also recognise that He is truly GOD IN THE FLESH (Colossians 2:9)!

'... And they shall call His name Immanuel- which means 'God with us' (Matthew 1:23).

Only God's sacrifice on the cross could save us!!

3. Thirdly HE IS LORD! The word Lord in the Greek is the word “Kyrios” which can mean- master, owner; he to whom a person belongs; the one who has power to make all of our decisions.

Do we see Jesus as our MASTER and OWNER? The one who has the power to make every decision of ours. Do we truly pray, let Your will be done Jesus, not our own?

And just as the disciple Thomas declared in John 20:28, do you see Jesus personally as 'My Lord and My God'?

So often, we can be guilty of PICKING and CHOOSING WHICH ASPECTS OF JESUS WE FEEL COMFORTABLE SERVING HIM AS. We are often happy to see Jesus as our SAVIOUR on a Sunday morning at church and yet the rest of the week we disregard Him as our LORD and instead live for our own selfish desires at work, or in school/Uni and in the home.

We cannot see Jesus just as our Saviour without also seeing Him as GOD IN THE FLESH and LORD and OWNER OF OUR VERY LIVES. He is the one we must fully submit to and obey!!

So the question we really need to ask ourselves this CHRISTmas is:

1.WILL WE LEARN TO EMBRACE EVERY ASPECT OF OUR WONDERFUL SAVIOUR JESUS?

(Do we see Jesus as all three of these titles- Saviour, Christ and Lord)

2. ARE WE WILLING TO SUBMIT OUR WHOLE LIVES AND SERVE JESUS FOR ALL THAT HE TRULY IS?

May our wonderful LORD and SAVIOUR Jesus bless you this CHRISTmas!!
