Firstly, according to 1 Corinthians 13:13 and 1 Peter 1:21 there is a DISTINCTION between faith and hope even though they are closely linked.
“And now these three remain: FAITH, HOPE and love....” (1 Corinthians 13:13)
“...and so your FAITH and HOPE are in God.” (1 Peter 1:21)
Secondly, according to Hebrews 11:1, faith and hope are interconnected!
“Now FAITH is being SURE of what we HOPE FOR and certain of what we do not see.”
From this passage we see that FAITH is being assured of the things we hope for!
The word HOPE in the Greek is the word “elpezo” which can mean to “wait, expect, trust for salvation with joy and full confidence.”
In this sense hope is an “assurance that what hasn’t happened yet will surely come to pass.”
According to Romans 8:23-25, our HOPE is always in what is YET TO COME!!
Titus 1:2- the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:7)
Romans 5:2b- the hope of the glory of God.
Romans 8:23-24 hope for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
1 Peter 1:13- hope on the grace to be given us when Jesus Christ is revealed!
HOPE seems to be an ATTITUDE (a joyful and confident expectation) in what is YET TO COME!! (Romans 8:23-25)
On the other hand, the word FAITH is the Greek word “pistis” which can mean “BELIEF with TRUST in God and Jesus for salvation”. It can also mean having a conviction of the truth of who Jesus/God is and what He can do! It can also mean “having assurance”!!
Eg. This word pistis is used in Matthew 9:22 when Jesus told the woman subject to bleeding for 12 years that “your FAITH has healed you.”
This meant she had a conviction of the truth that Jesus could heal her! Her belief, trust and conviction of the truth of who Jesus was and what he could do impacted her actions in that moment to push through to Jesus!!
FAITH (belief, trust and conviction of the truth in God) seems to impact our actions in the NOW and how we live now, because FAITH IS SHOWN BY OUR ACTIONS! (See James 2:14-17)
This could also be why Hebrews 11:1 says that Faith is the SUBSTANCE of things hoped for.
For example, in Hebrews 11:4 it says by faith (belief and trust in God) Abel offered a better sacrifice than Cain did.
Because Abel’s trust and belief was in God, it impacted his actions at the time to offer God a better sacrifice!
May our FAITH and HOPE be TRULY and COMPLETELY IN OUR SAVIOUR AND LORD JESUS!
