WEEK 15 “ OVERCOMING LUKEWARMNESS!” (REVELATION 3:20)

Revelation 3:20

”Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with Me“.

Read Revelation 3:14-22 Jesus’ letter to the church in Laodicea.

Context: our saviour Jesus was addressing this letter to the lukewarm church in Laodicea. He was asking them to be earnest and repent before it was too late!! Which brings us to verse 20.

A few thoughts:

1. 'I stand at the door and KNOCK'.

Notice from this verse that Jesus won't force His way into our hearts, we need to openly and voluntarily invite Him into our hearts in repentance!!

2. 'If anyone HEARS MY VOICE and opens the door'.

Do we listen for the voice of Jesus (the voice of the Holy Spirit) to lead us to repentance and guide us in our everyday life? Are we obedient in obeying His voice? In John 10:27 Jesus said “My sheep HEAR MY VOICE; I know them, and they follow me.”

3. 'I will come in and EAT WITH HIM'. Notice our saviour Jesus desires an intimate relationship with us!! To share a meal together is to have intimate fellowship together!! In Matthew 7:23 the reason many will not enter the kingdom of God is because they did not have an intimate relationship with our wonderful Jesus!! The word 'knew' in the Greek in Matthew 7:23 is the word 'ginosko' which can refer to the type of intimacy a husband and wife have together!!

4. Jesus wants full ownership of your hearts!! Notice His change of language from 'I will come and eat with Him' (which means we still have ownership and He is our guest), to 'HE WILL EAT WITH ME.’ (Which means that Jesus now has ownership of the house and we are His guest!!)

Have you given Jesus FULL OWNERSHIP of your heart? Or is He still a passenger in your car? Will you let His will be done and not your own?

Jesus does not want to be the guest in your heart, He wants to be the owner!!

5. Notice the context is that Jesus is talking about repentance? The means by which He gets us to repent is by inviting Him in to share a meal!!

Romans 2:4- it is the kindness of God that leads us to repentance!!

In Luke 19:5 in the story of Zacchaeus, it was Jesus coming to fellowship with Zacchaeus at His home that led to him repenting and being saved!! It is Jesus wanting to come into our hearts and share a meal with us that will make us want to repent!!

May we truly allow Jesus to have full ownership of our hearts and lives in repentance through this intimacy with Him!!
